Stein, Edith
(1891–1942)
   Martyr.
Stein was born of a Jewish family in Breslau, Germany, and she was educated in Göttingen and Freiburg. In 1922 she was converted to Christianity and was baptised as a Roman Catholic. She was a signifi- cant figure in the phenomenological school of Edmund Husserl and she published several philosophical papers. In 1934 she was received as a Carmelite nun and in 1938 was moved to Holland. Despite her religious habit, she was arrested by the Nazis as a Jew and she died in a Polish concentration camp. She is regarded as a modern-day martyr.
